Sir,

I sincerely appreciate the response given to the research paper "Tobacco use among teenagers in Ludhiana, Punjab, India: A survey of initiation, prevalence, knowledge and attitude."

A pilot study on 40 subjects was conducted on school children. Three questions were asked regarding the practice component of tobacco use; frequency of tobacco product used, form of tobacco used and place of use of tobacco. The numbers and the percentages for each are mentioned in the relevant figures and table. Regarding the practice component, more detailed questions were not designed as use of tobacco is still a taboo in north India especially in females.

This survey was primarily intended to be conducted in schools. But during the pilot study, students were hesitant in revealing their tobacco-related habits. A random sample of 50 subjects were taken from the community setting since there was no adequate previous literature available. However, in the community-based survey, the subjects revealed their habits more freely and many of the regular tobacco users were school dropouts.

A large community-based survey is being planned to understand the prevalence, current attitudes and practices relating to tobacco use in adolescents.
